The ancient Egyptians believed the heart was an important key to entering the afterlife. During the process of mummification, the heart was left in the body and protected by a valuable heart scarab. They also believed that the heart was the source of wisdom and memories. In Egyptian mythology, the metaphysical heart was forged from a single drop from the mother’s heart at the time of conception.

In the early 15th century, France created suit marks for playing cards and made the heart shape one of the suits. Later it became a recurring symbol for Valentine’s Day and related cards.
